Remembering Lenny Coyne

Leonard "Lenny" Coyne is a well known and loved Trachtler, especially among the East Coast Vereine of Gau-NA.  It is with great sadness we acknowledge his passing on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at the age of 56. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Barbara, mother Dhalma (and the late Anthony), and loving brothers Lawrence and Pierre, as well as many nieces and nephews. (The photo at left is of Lenny and Barbara on the set of Disney's movie "Enchanted.")

Grad Student Wants Help with a Survey

Please help out grad student Lisa Raab with a survey she has open until April 2!  Here's what she wrote to us:

Matthias Raab, "der Kalendermacher," Died Suddenly

Many of you have been enjoying the Oberbaierische Festtäg- und Alte Bräuch- Kalender for some or all of the last almost 30 years of its publication. You may not know that the beautiful large format calendar is the inspiration of a great couple, Matthias “Hias” and Brigitte Raab. The whimsical artwork throughout the issue is thanks to artist Hias; the couple’s love of Heimat shows through on every page. They travel all over to get many of the wonderful photos, participating in Feste throughout Bayern.

Museum der Bayerischen Geschichte

The new "Museum der Bayerischen Geschichte" in Regensburg is looking for original clothing (Lederhose, Janker, Jacket, Hut, Dirndl, Mieder, etc) to document the 19th century history of migration from Bavaria to the U.S. The clothing would be displayed in the new museum.  It is not clear whether this would be a loan or a donation.

Measuring Women & Men for Tracht

At the 2015 Gaufest, Vroni Menzinger from Trachten Pöllmann showed how to measure women and men to get the best fitting Tracht. The link takes you to four pages that explain the measurements that need to be taken and how to take them. Descriptions are provided in both German and English. The information is also on our website under "Resources/Tracht." Take a look or download the pages for future reference.   Measuring Women and Men for Tracht.

Bairisch -- A Great Language!

Bavarian isn't just a dialect, it's a language onto itself. One man, Otto Hietsch, loved it so much he wrote a Bavarian-English dictionary series that I have owned for many years already. Every once in a while, I quote some of Hietsch's entries in the "Gauzeitung" in the "Bayrisch G'redt" column.  The set has been added to and combined into one book.  The link takes you to an entertaining Bayrischer Rundfunk segment about the author and many of the amusing words contained in his book.
