We recently learned that Hans Schupp, a founding member of Gauverband Nordamerika passed away on June 9 at the age of 86. Hans was one of the first Gaubeisitzer.
In January 1966, Hans Schupp represented his Verein, SG Alpenland Montreal, at the founding meeting of Gauverband Nordamerika. Of the 17 Vereine attending, Alpenland was the only one from Canada. At that meeting, the delegates elected the first slate of officers to lead the newly formed Gauverband. Among them was Hans Schupp, who became one of the first Gaubeisitzer.
Hans served as Gaubeisitzer until 1969, when the delegates elected him to the position of 2. Gauvorplattler. In 1970, Hans moved to Vancouver, BC, and resigned his position. Once in Vancouver, he joined Almrausch Schuhplattlergruppe, a Verein that has since disbanded. Hans’s brother Arthur was Vorplattler of the Verein. Representing Almrausch, Hans attended the 1978 Delegates Meeting in Newark, Delaware, and was on the nominating committee at the 1980 meeting in Milwaukee. In about 1995 Hans formed a separate dance group affiliated with another local Vancouver club and led that group for six years. Until his death Hans enjoyed attending functions and social activities of the Austrian and Bavarian clubs in the Vancouver area, often bringing his accordion along to lead singing sessions.
We extend our sympathies to the family and friends of Hans Schupp.
